Vape Phone Cases: What to Measure Before You Buy One
A vape phone case has to fit two things, not one. Here is what to measure first, and what the FAA actually requires when you fly with the device.

A vape phone case is a phone case with a compartment on the back that holds a disposable or a cartridge pen. The pitch is obvious: one thing to carry instead of two, and you stop leaving your device on bar tops.
The problem is that almost every listing describes only half of what has to fit. It tells you the phone model. It does not tell you what will go in the holder — and that is the half that decides whether the case is any use to you.
Fit is two problems, not one
A normal phone case has one fit requirement. This kind has two, and they are independent:
- The phone. Model-specific, usually stated clearly, and easy to get right.
- The device. The compartment has fixed internal dimensions. Disposables do not.
Vape hardware has no standard form factor. A slim cartridge pen is a narrow cylinder. A modern high-capacity disposable is a fat rectangular slab with a screen on it. These are not interchangeable shapes, and a compartment sized for one will either not close on the other or will not hold it at all.
So the listing that says “fits iPhone 16 Pro” has told you nothing about the part you care about.
The three numbers to take before you order
Measure the device you actually use, not the one in the product photo. You need:
- Length, from the base to the top of the mouthpiece
- Width, across the widest face
- Depth, front to back — this is the one people skip, and it is the one that stops the case closing
A ruler is enough; you are not looking for tenths of a millimetre. Then compare against the compartment dimensions in the listing. If the listing does not state compartment dimensions, that is your answer about how much the seller knows about the product.
We are deliberately not publishing a table of device dimensions here. We would have to copy those figures from manufacturer pages, and manufacturer-stated numbers are exactly the kind of claim this site exists to check rather than repeat. Your own device and a ruler are better evidence than our transcription of someone’s spec sheet.
What the FAA actually says about flying with it
This is the part no retail listing carries, and it is worth knowing before you put a device against your phone and walk into an airport.
Electronic smoking devices must be carried on your person or in carry-on baggage. They are not permitted in checked bags. The TSA states the same thing from the passenger side: carry-on yes, checked bags no.
Beyond that, there is a requirement most people have never read. Passengers are required to take effective measures to prevent accidental activation of the heating element. The FAA lists examples, and one of them is directly relevant here:
Examples of effective measures to deactivate the device include, but are not limited to: Removing the battery from the electronic smoking device; separating the battery from the heating coil; placing the electronic smoking device into a protective case; using a protective cover, safety latch, or locking device on the electronic smoking device’s heating coil activation button.
That is from the FAA’s PackSafe guidance for e-cigarettes and vaping devices, which cites 49 CFR 175.10(a)(19). A case is a named example of an effective measure.
Two limits on that, stated plainly because the marketing will not state them for you:
- The FAA is describing a protective case, not this specific product category. A phone case with an open friction-fit sleeve is not obviously the same thing as an enclosed protective case, and we are not in a position to tell you a particular product satisfies the rule.
- The listed measures assume a button. Most disposables sold now are auto-draw: there is no fire button to cover or latch. The examples about covering an activation button do not map onto a device that has none.
Also worth knowing while you are there: recharging devices or batteries on board the aircraft is not permitted, and each lithium ion battery must not exceed 100 Wh. The button problem on the ground
The same accidental-activation issue matters in a pocket, not just at altitude.
If your device has a fire button, a tight compartment can hold that button down. A coil that fires with no air moving through it heats the wick without anything to carry the heat away, and that is the mechanism behind a scorched taste that does not go away. If your device is auto-draw, the failure mode is different: the sensor sits behind an air intake, and a case that covers or partially blocks that intake can leave the device unresponsive. If yours has stopped drawing since you started carrying it this way, the intake is the first thing to look at — see what to check when a vape is not hitting.
Heat, and why the two things you are stacking do not like each other
A phone under load gets warm. Charging, navigation, video, a hot car dashboard — all of it puts heat into the back of the phone, which is exactly where the compartment is.
E-liquid thins as it warms. Thinner liquid floods a wick more easily, which is the ordinary cause of a device that spits or leaks after sitting somewhere hot. Lithium cells also age faster at sustained high temperatures. Neither effect is dramatic over an afternoon; both are worth knowing before you leave the pair on a dashboard in July.
iPhone 17, and why the model number is the easy half

and it will be iphone 18 next year. But the model number is the half of the fit problem that
sellers already get right.
When Apple changes the camera module layout, existing case moulds stop fitting and the listings update. That part of the market corrects itself. What does not change between generations is the compartment: a case redesigned for a new camera bump usually keeps the same holder, sized for whatever device shape was common when the mould was cut.
So if you are shopping for a current iPhone, the useful question is not whether the case fits your phone. It is whether the holder was designed for the device you have now.
Android, and the fit problem in reverse
The Android side has the opposite shape of problem. There are far more handset models, so model-specific cases are less common and universal or semi-universal designs are more so. A universal case that stretches to fit a range of phones is, by construction, not moulded tightly to any of them — which usually means the holder is a generic sleeve rather than a fitted cavity.
That is not automatically worse. A generic sleeve accommodates more device shapes than a fitted cavity does. It is just a different trade: looser grip on the device, more tolerance for what the device is.

We have not tested any of these cases. That means no ranking and no scores on this page, and the audit that runs on every build blocks us from publishing scores for anything we have not measured, so there is no version of this article with a top-five list in it.

What we can tell you is the part that is checkable: the fit problem has two halves, sellers usually address one, and the federal rules for flying with the device are published and specific. Take the three measurements before you order, and the rest is a normal phone case purchase.
