Strongest Nicotine Vapes: What 5% Actually Means

Looking for the strongest nicotine vape? The FDA authorized list tops out at 6%, so 5% is not a legal ceiling, and total nicotine is what differs.

Search “strongest nicotine vape” and almost every result tells you the answer is 5%. That is true and useless at the same time: nearly every disposable sold in the US is 5%. If they are all the same percentage, percentage cannot be what separates them.

Here is what actually does.

The strongest one you can lawfully buy is 6%, and it has a name

There is a checkable answer to this question, and almost no article gives it.

The FDA publishes a one-page list, E-Cigarettes Authorized by the FDA (last updated March 2026), whose subtitle is “These are the only e-cigarettes that may be lawfully sold in the United States.” The highest nicotine concentration on it is NJOY DAILY EXTRA at 6% — in menthol and in Rich Tobacco. Below that the list runs through 5%, 4.8%, 4.5%, 3%, 2.4%, 1.8% and 1.5%.

So the strongest lawfully marketed vape in the US is not a mystery product with a big number on the box. It is 6%, and there are two of them.

Note what this also tells you: 5% is not a regulatory ceiling. The FDA has authorized products above it. Anything advertised as “the strongest legal vape” at 5% is describing the market’s habit, not a limit in law.

On the “50 mg/mL legal maximum” you see everywhere: we could not find that figure in federal regulation, and we are not going to assert the absence of a rule we simply did not locate. What we can show is the positive fact above — authorized products exist at 6% — which is enough to retire the claim that 5% is a legal cap.

The restrictions that do bite are elsewhere: state flavour bans and product directories change what is on the shelf near you far more than nicotine strength does.

A note on how we read “strongest”: we take it to mean how much nicotine the device holds and how hard it hits — not the number on the box.

5% and 50 mg/mL are the same number

These are two ways of writing one measurement, and mixing them up is where most confusion starts.

So “50 mg” and “5%” on two different boxes are not two strengths. They are the same strength written twice.

The number that actually differs: total nicotine

Concentration tells you how strong each puff is. It does not tell you how much nicotine is in the device. For that you need:

Total nicotine (mg) = concentration (mg/mL) × e-liquid volume (mL)

Two devices both marked 5% can differ by a factor of three in total nicotine, purely because one holds more liquid. This is the single most useful thing to know when comparing “strong” vapes, and it is almost never printed on the front of the box — you have to find the mL figure.

Why there is no product table here

The original plan for this article was a table: model, concentration, capacity, total nicotine. We dropped it, and the reason is worth stating.

Every figure in that table would have come from a manufacturer’s own page. Copying a column of manufacturer claims and formatting it as a comparison would make it look as though someone had checked, when all that happened is transcription. Capacity in particular is the number we exist to question — the whole reason this site weighs devices is that stated volume and delivered volume are not the same figure.

So the table stays out until there are measurements behind it. What is above — the arithmetic, and the FDA list — you can verify yourself today.

Salt vs freebase changes how it feels, not how strong it is

Nearly all high-strength disposables use nicotine salts. Salts are smoother at high concentration, which is exactly why 5% is tolerable in a disposable and would be harsh as freebase.

That smoothness is a trap when you are chasing “strongest”: a salt device at 5% can feel gentler than a freebase device at 2%, while delivering more nicotine. Perceived strength and delivered nicotine are not the same thing, and a device that feels mild is not a weaker one.

Airflow and coil also change delivery. A tight, restricted draw concentrates it; an airy draw dilutes it across a bigger puff.

What to do if 5% is too much

Stepping down is a volume decision as much as a strength one:

Both 5% and lower strengths sit on the same shelf, and a device being “American” tells you nothing about its strength.
